The Vicissitudes of George

GeorgeFor some years students in the Institute of Archaeology and Antiquity at the University of Birmingham have been watched over by George. George, an anthropomorphic coffin lid, stands in a glass case in the Institute’s museum – a space also used for seminars and small group teaching – and has long been an object of curiosity. In a recent article published in Current Archaeology Emily Millward, currently studying for her PhD in Egyptology and working as an assistant in the Research and Cultural Collections department at the University, reveals a little of George’s somewhat eventful history ……Current Archaeology
