flexible supplement fund

The MRC AIM Flexible Supplement fund is available to all MRC funded students at our three partner institutions. This scheme is supported through block funding from the MRC and provides financial support for a broad range of research and training activities. The flexible funding is designed to provide students with world-leading training that would not be otherwise accessible at the host and partner institutions.

Areas which the funding can support:

  • High-cost or exceptional training opportunities, for example in advanced research skills or wider professional skills such as public engagement.
  • Placements including internships and collaborative laboratory visits.
  • Training in partnership with industry or at the interdisciplinary interface.
  • Transitions from PhD – activities taking place between thesis submission and viva with a discrete, clearly defined objective intended to increase the competitiveness of recipients in the next stage of their career. For example, laboratory visits to learn a new technique.
  • Cohort events with a defined training component.

In addition, the DTP may also use flexible supplement funds to support small-scale Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) activities.

Eligibility:

All current MRC-funded students at our three partner institutions are eligible to apply for the Flexible Supplement fund. These include:

  • Core MRC DTP students
  • MRC Industrial CASE (iCASE) students

Application process:

Students must complete an application form for consideration by the review panel. All applications are reviewed by the DTP Leadership Team, with decisions typically communicated within two weeks.

The flexible funding aims to support students in accessing world-class training opportunities that are not otherwise available through the host or partner institutions. Please note retrospective applications will not be accepted.
