NHS Charities Together were established in 2000 as the Association of NHS Charities. Founded as a membership organisation of charities supporting the NHS, it aimed to support member charities to increase impact through training and advocacy.

In 2018, the Association of NHS Charities changed their name to NHS Charities Together, and launched the NHS Big Tea event in celebration of the NHS’ 70th birthday.

The first year the event was held, more than 4,000 tea parties were held (including one hosted by the Mayor of London), raising £250,000 for NHS charities.

The campaign achieved significant media attention and celebrity support. The Big Tea is now an annual event and publicity materials of the Big Tea continue to feature members of the public and NHS staff enjoying cups of tea.
