Key research expertise

Our work in the Bioanalytics department focuses on the development of standardized approaches to characterize signalling and metabolic pathways of complex biological systems with spatial and temporal resolution. The ultimate goal is to increase our knowledge on the molecular mechanisms which underlie disease pathogenesis. This may lead to the identification of new biomarkers and potential targets to help diagnose and eventually develop personalized therapeutic intervention of a variety of illnesses (including cardiovascular diseases).

A core contribution to the TAPAS programme is our expertise in mass spectrometry-based proteomics and lipidomics enabling the implementation of systems-based approaches that help understand processes from receptor signalling to platelet activation or inhibition.

Key research facilities

We are located in new purpose-built laboratories that enable multiomics analysis of platelet function to be performed. We have state of the art mass spectrometer including Orbitrap Fusion Lumos, Orbitrap Elite and Orbitrap Velos for shotgun proteomics studies, and Q Exactive plus and QTRAP 6500 for targeted peptides or metabolites study. In addition, we have extensive bioinformatics facilities, employing Proteome Discover and biological modelling platforms such as COPASI, and access to a computer cluster.
