A pilot project was launched in October 2022, as part of an ESRC Impact Acceleration Account project. Dr Julie Blake, corroborated with school leaders and teachers in CORE Education Trust, to develop the beginnings of an anti-racist strategy that focused on the needs of Black Caribbean girls and students.

Outputs from the LBGL pilot include teacher training and the production of a guidance booklet. The key users of the guidance and CPD programme are school leaders and teachers who have a direct link with developing teaching and learning strategies to raise the attainment of Black Caribbean girls in their classrooms, and provide an inclusive learning environment.

The guidance and CPD provide an anti-racist and intersectional framework for improving the lived experiences of Black Caribbean girls in secondary schools as well as providing teachers with strategies and practical tips for inclusive engagement to bring about holistic change in teacher language, support provision, behavioural strategies and developing/decolonizing an inclusive curriculum. The guidance also  focused on developing the leadership skills of Black Caribbean girls, as leadership skills are already in the skillset of these pupils who employ resilience to navigate their school experience.

Impact from LBGL pilot: Teachers stated their awareness of the issues affecting Black Caribbean girls in school has transformed their teaching practice, for example, a Head of Science teacher said she “assigned leadership tasks to Black girls in lessons and was already seeing a difference”.
