TreeMort is about improving our understanding of tree mortality across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>So far the team has discovered&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.ac.uk\/news\/latest\/2019\/08\/new-study-shows-impact-of-largescale-tree-death-on-carbon-storage.aspx\">Large-scale events such as fires, storms and clearcut harvests are behind about 12% of the total tree biomass dying each year.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.ac.uk\/news\/latest\/2019\/02\/World%27s-biggest-terrestrial-carbon-sinks-are-found-in-young-forests.aspx\">Young forest stands recovering from past disturbances are a major contributor to the global carbon sink, but that this sink is currently concentrated in extra-tropical forests.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/368\/6494\/eaaz9463\">A combination of past human management and the growing impacts of climate have led to an on-going trend for the world&#8217;s forests to become, on average, progressively younger.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>More news can be found on our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/more.bham.ac.uk\/treemort\/project-updates\/\">Project Updates<\/a> page.<\/p>\n<p>One core project aim is to provide datasets that can support model-based assessments of the terrestrial carbon cycle.
