{"id":283,"date":"2020-10-31T15:08:30","date_gmt":"2020-10-31T15:08:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/more.bham.ac.uk\/populism-in-action\/?p=283"},"modified":"2020-11-30T09:03:01","modified_gmt":"2020-11-30T09:03:01","slug":"283","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/more.bham.ac.uk\/populism-in-action\/2020\/10\/31\/283\/","title":{"rendered":"Has Coronavirus Taken The Shine Off Italy\u2019s Prime Minister Conte?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Defying a series of domestic crises and an unstable governing coalition in Italy, Giuseppe Conte (pictured) could become one of the country\u2019s top 10 longest-serving Prime Ministers after 1945.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He has won credit from analysts, and from many Italians, for an honest and straightforward approach to the Coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 38,000 in the country.<\/p>\n<p>But now Conte may become a political victim of the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/200a14f7-7eb8-495a-92a7-3706e78df1e2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a <em>Financial Times<\/em> overview<\/a>, the Populism in Action Project\u2019s Dr. Daniele Albertazzi explains that Conte, a law professor, benefitted from the combination of competence and his status as an outsider among career politicians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike many other leaders in Europe, Conte has enjoyed [an] increase in popularity, but he has also played it well. He has grown and he has surprised people,\u201d Albertazzi says.<\/p>\n<p>However, PiAP\u2019s principal investigator continues, \u201cBut this time is different to February or March. The economy is going to be hit very badly, and people are getting very tired of restrictions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He cautions that Conte\u2019s popularity is likely to take a battering in weeks to come.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We saw this with [economist and former Prime Minister] Mario Monti. People who come in from outside of politics are always quite attractive at the start, as Italians loathe the political classes.
