Working Remotely at the University of Birmingham

Virtual Private Network

This allows your computer at home to appear to be behind the University firewall. This is useful if you want to access shared drives, some UoB  intranet features and journals that the university has online access to.

The first step is to register for the service from the IT Helpdesk following the guide below.

Setting up the VPN  you will automatically be set up for the 2-factor authentication service.

Note: that if you need to use the VPN to access New Core you must join the VPN choosing “all traffic”.

Skype for Business

Provided by the University can be used for videoconferences.  More info here.

Note: Skype (see below) can be used to connect to Skype for Business calls.

Skype

If you cannot use Skype for Business, personal Skype is a useful alternative. You can download it here. You will need to make your own Microsoft account during the setup process. It’s probably a good idea to make a different account from the one you use for personal calls, nor to use your Birmingham email address.

Help with Skype is available here.

BEARDataShare

BEARDatashare is a way to share files between people. You can download a client to your computer / mobile phone or you can use the web based interface.

Canvas Conferencing

Help to create a canvas conference can be found here.
