The debate about wearing burqa and niqab reaches the Spanish Senate

The debate about banning the burqa and the niqab in public spaces will continue at the
national level after weeks of public debate in some municipalities (like Huesca and
Reus).
Partido Popular’s (PP, the main opposition party) proposal for an open debate on the
banning of the burqa and the niqab was supported by the Catalonian nationalist party
Convergencia I Unió. Thus, the banning of the burqa and the niqab will be discussed in
the Senate.
The rest of the parties consider this move to be a political strategy focused on the
upcoming elections.

The Popular Party will propose a ban on the burqa and niqab in the Catalonian Parliament and the Spanish Senate

Alicia Sánchez Camacho, the Popular Party’s Catalonian leader, said that she will submit a proposal to both the Catalonian Parliament and the Spanish Senate for the banning of the burqa and niqab in public spaces.
