Halal-Related Advertising Grows in France with the Start of Ramadan

News Agencies – August 6, 2010
It’s food advertising with a halal twist – billboard posters that go blank in daylight hours during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Halal food distributor “Isla Delice” has launched posters on August 10 which show an empty table by day. By night, thanks to a clever back-lighting system, the posters change to become replete with delicious traditional Muslim foods. Isla Delice’s advertising line is Fièrement halal (“Proud to be halal”). Some 6,000 other billboards promoting their meats are on display throughout France.
Halal is a huge industry in France, worth around 5.5 billion Euros in 2010 and growing by 15 percent each year. Some 90 percent of France’s five million Muslims eat Halal food. “Mainstream halal advertising campaigns have been about for barely a year,” says Abbas Bendali, head of Solis, an organization that observes ethnic marketing trends in France. “Halal advertising is accelerating.”

Schools bode new path for Islam in France

News Agencies – September 24, 2009

As Islam in France becomes more established with a growing number of cemeteries and mosques, new attention is being given to private Islamic religious schools.

Three new Islamic schools have recently been announced – one in Montigny-le-Bretonneux, another in Marseille and a third in Toulouse. Most of these schools have been launched with support from the UOIF (the Union of French Islamic Organizations or the Union des organisations islamiques de France).

There are currently 650 students attending Islamic schools in France. The Averroès school in Lille is the only Muslim school in the country to have a formal contract with the state, and whose teachers are paid by the state.

Arab Americans To Widely Vote For Kerry: Poll

WASHINGTON, April 28 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) – A majority of Arab Americans in four battleground states would vote for democratic candidate John Kerry if presidential elections were held Thursday, April 29, a poll unveiled. The poll, conducted by the Washington-based Arab American Institute, found that 49 percent of all Arab-American voters in Florida, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania – all swing states in the November election – would vote for Kerry, while 30 percent would vote for incumbent Republican President George W. Bush. However, with Ralph Nader – an American of Lebanese descent – in the mix, Kerry’s support would slip to 45 percent, and Bush’s to 28 percent, while the independent contender would get 14 percent of the vote. The poll is based on interviews with 503 Arab-American voters in the four states and has a 4.5 percent margin of error.
