A man has been arrested after two pigs’ heads were dumped outside an Islamic school in Lancashire. Police said the 28-year-old was held on suspicion of racially-aggravated provocation following the incident at Markazul Uloom Girls’ School in Blackburn. Detectives launched a hate crime investigation and scoured CCTV footage after the animal remains were left at the boarding school in December. One of the heads is understood to have been left by the gates, while the other was thrown over the walls.
The incident outraged religious, political and community leaders, led by the Bishop of Blackburn Julian Henderson. A Lancashire Police spokeswoman said: “I can confirm that a 28-year-old man from Darwen has been arrested on suspicion of racially-aggravated provocation and has been bailed until February 16.”
Officers stepped up patrols in the area to quell community concerns after the pig heads were left at the gates of the school just before Christmas. Eating pork is forbidden in Islam and Lancashire Police said the incident was being treated as a hate crime.

Fifteen national secondary school exams were stolen from the Ibn Ghaldoun Islamic school in Rotterdam.
With last week’s initial discovery of one stolen exam the national French exam was cancelled, and 17,000 pupils across the country had to retake a new version of the exam the following day.
After this incident a further 14 exams went missing from Ibn Ghaldoun. It is unlikely that students will retake exams nationwide, as the Education Ministry believes that these exams have not been distributed to pupils of other schools. However the city of Rotterdam has suspended its diploma presentations until the end of June while the issue is under investigation. Students have been given until Friday evening to admit to having viewed a stolen exam.
Three Ibn Ghaldoun students have been arrested in connection with the theft. Police say there was no sign of a break-in. However the Education Ministry says that there is no reason to believe that school management is involved, and rector Bart Renders insists he is “almost 100 per cent sure” teachers are not involved in the theft.

Deep in the wooded hills of Burgundy in central France, an unusual institute is training unusual students: aspiring French imams who hope to minister to the country’s large Muslim population. After seven intensive years of study, only 10 or so graduates each year to lead prayers or preach at mosques following graduation from the European Institute of Human Sciences de Saint-Leger-de-Fougeret Over the past nine years, various governments have encouraged the professional training of local religious leaders. Interior Minister Manuel Valls recently backed the practice, even if the job of imam is badly paid, if at all, and enjoys no official recognition.
The initiative goes back 20 years when the Union of Islamic Organisations in France, which has close ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, converted a former children’s holiday centre into the institute. Its stated aim is to train imams equipped “with a solid knowledge of Islam and the socio-cultural realities of Europe.” The idea was to provide an alternative to the recruitment of foreign imams, who often spoke no French and had little or no knowledge of French lifestyles.
An Islamic school in west suburban Lombard is at least the second Muslim institution to report an attack this past weekend.
The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago says the College Preparatory School of America, an Islamic school at 331 W. Madison St. in Lombard, was subjected to vandalism on Sunday night.
The council says someone hurled a 7-Up bottle filled with acid and other unspecified materials at the school during the nighttime Ramadan prayers.
During the prayer session, worshipers heard a loud bang and went to find an empty bottle thrown on the window of the school. No one was injured.
An Islamic school that had been using teaching materials that dis Jews and encouraged boys to keep fit for jihad has lost its license to use Toronto District School Board property. The board suspended a permit issued to the Islamic Shia Study Centre, which operated the East End Madrassah out of a Toronto high school until an outcry last week over the content of its curriculum booklets.
But the school’s curriculum, which it has now taken off its website, referred to “crafty,” “treacherous” Jews and contrasted Islam with “the Jews and the Nazis.” The passages were from two books published by Iranian foundations. Girls, meanwhile, were told to limit their involvement in physical activities and to instead engage in hobbies that would prepare them to become mothers and wives.

About a hundred parents waited in line outside the Calgary Islamic School for a chance to enroll their children. The private school — which teaches kindergarten to Grade 11 — has room for about 20 new students next year, officials said.
But since it’s the only school of its kind in Calgary, which has a Muslim population of about 60,000 people, parents line up outside in the cold for a chance to register every year, said principal Moussa Ouarou. He added that the waiting list already has 300 names on it.
The school, which is located at 26th Street and 37 Avenue N.E., teaches the regular provincial curriculum in addition to Arabic language courses, Islamic studies and Qur’an recitation and memorization.
Protesters of the expansion of a Saudi government- funded Islamic school say they fear an increase in traffic in the area. But debates usually transform into hot discussions about the spread of radical Islam through the school.
The Islamic Saudi Academy is seeking to serve more students, and area residents are concerned. “I submit no Catholic textbook has anything near the venom and demonstrated incitement to murder as these Saudi textbooks,” one resident says.
One parent of a student of the academy says there are no problems with radicalism: “If we were breeding terrorists, you would be hearing about it from the students.”
However, the school does have problems. A former valedictorian is currently serving a life sentence for plotting to assassinate President Bush.
Shock and anger is spreading among Hamilton’s 20,000 Muslims after the city’s largest mosque was firebombed. The mosque includes the Islamic School of Hamilton which has about 200 students from kindergarten to Grade 8. Attackers had used a large rock to smash a hole in a front window at the mosque and then lobbed in what police are calling an “incendiary device.”
The Molotov cocktail did only minimal damage to the Stone Church Road East mosque, approximately $3,000 CAD. The Hamilton police hate crime unit and chief arson investigator Sgt. Tim Bower are leading the investigation. Premier Dalton McGuinty, Hamilton Mountain MP Chris Charlton and the Ottawa-based Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations were among those who condemned the attack. “Ontario’s diversity is our great strength,” McGuinty said. “So when a mosque or other place of worship is desecrated, it is an attack on all Ontarians.”
The same mosque was damaged in 2001 when vandals destroyed its front lobby by smashing windows with beer bottles in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks.
A private highschool called “Éducative” will open soon at Villeneuve-Saint-Georges (Val-de-Marne). The tuition is estimated at 4500 Euros per year. The school belongs to a network set up by Fethullah Gülen, a Turkish thinker sometimes accused of promoting Islamicization.
There are two thousand similar schools already present around the world.
Ensumata Abdoulghani, mother of three, was a passenger on a Yemenia Airbus that crashed into the Indian Ocean. The wife of Muslim teacher Youssouf Mahamoud, left Ottawa just over a week ago to visit her ailing mother in Comoros, her family said. The family is extremely active in the Ottawa Muslim Community. Mahamoud is a well-known teacher at Ecole Ibn Batouta, a French-language Islamic school, and also organizes summer camps and youth-oriented activities.
