Vandalism on Harrisonburg Mosque

HARRISONBURG, Va –– The Islamic Center of the Shenandoah Valley was vandalized sometime on Thursday night. The center is a place of worship for people of Islamic faith.

We cannot show the vandalism in its entirety because the images were very vulgar. It appeared to be male genitalia and was spray painted as well as racial slurs against blacks, and vulgar references to Iraqis.

WHSV staff have contacted with police. We do know the FBI has been contacted about this as well.

“Given the nature of the vandalism and ongoing international events, it is important that a bias motive be investigated in this case,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

Hooper said that CAIR’s Washington state chapter recently held a news conference in Seattle to call for a bias crime investigation of hate graffiti, including the slurs “sand n**gers,” “doon [sic] coons,” scrawled on a rental vehicle used by a group of Seattle-area Muslims on a recent vacation trip to Chelan, Wash.

CAIR report says US Muslims still face civil rights issues

The Council on American-Islamic Relations’ (CAIR) annual report on the status of civil rights for American Muslims has been released.

The findings indicate that while hate crimes against Muslims are down, reported complaints of discrimination and civil rights violations continue to rise. In fact, the numbers are the highest they have been since CAIR was founded.

“Hate crimes and vandalism are down but we are seeing more workplace and media bias,” says Dawud Walid, local CAIR executive director.

While discrimination issues at school and work are cause for concern, there is also room for optimism.

“At least we had someone like Colin Powell saying publicly ‘what if Obama was a Muslim,’ and we had a senator McCain rejecting the claim that Obama is a Muslim in a public forum,” says Ibrahim Hooper, CAIR Communications Director. “There are two competing trends, and we hope new emerging one wins up.”

CAIR asks Calif. radio station to reprimand anti-Muslim hosts

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has called on a San Francisco radio station to reprimand two talk show hosts for a recent segment in which they mocked Islam, misstated Muslim beliefs, and cast suspicion on political participation of Muslim Americans.

CAIR reported that KSFO 560-AM host Brian Sussman and co-host “Officer Vic” said during their program: “Islamic finance is about living within your means and helping the needy – unless they’re Jews,” and “The great honorable qualities of that good old time religion: honor killings, female circumcision, not allowing women to drive…Jews are monkeys, pigs.”

CAIR is asking American Muslims and people of conscience to contact KSFO officials and advertisers to share their concerns over the anti-Muslim remarks. “Radio hosts are free to hold bigoted views, but listeners have no obligation to subsidize those views by purchasing the goods or services of companies that choose to advertise on hate-filled programs,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

CAIR Asks FBI to Probe Paintball Attack on Maryland Mosque

The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) called on the FBI and local law enforcement to investigate a paintball attack on a mosque in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Officials at the Islamic Center of Maryland (ICM) said that up to 70 paintballs were shot at the facility on a recent early Saturday morning. “We urge both the FBI and local police to investigate a possible bias motive for this incident,” said CAIR Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
