Call to protest against the movie and the cartoon that offend the Prophet Mohammed

The Islamic Commission of Melilla (CIM) has called for a demonstration on Saturday to protest against the movie and the cartoons that offend the Prophet Muhammad. The protest, which will leave at 18.00 from the Central Mosque to the Plaza of Spain, will be supported by the main opposition party in the Assembly of the Autonomous City, the Coalition for Melilla (CPM).

Controversial and contested elections to Islamic Commission of Melilla

The Islamic Commission of Melilla (CIM) is made up of four different Islamic entities in the city. On 8th January the Muslim population of the city was called to vote in the election for the president of the CIM. Controversy has surrounded the process.

One of the Muslim associations that comprises the CIM has denounced the lack of transparency and the existence of serious irregularities in the democratic process of election. Now, the same association is demanding a new election on the basis that the first was not legitimate.

Muslims angry over Melilla Day celebrations

MADRID – (AFP) – Spanish Muslims said they were unhappy at Spain’s intention to celebrate Melilla Day on Monday to mark the 510th anniversary of Spanish rule in the north African enclave on the Moroccan coast. “We consider it an attack on the dignity of Muslims,” Abderraman Benyahya, spokesman for the Melilla Islamic Commission (CIM), told the Europa Press news agency The CIM groups Islamic residents of the tiny enclave, a Phoenician colony in antiquity and which conquistador Pedro de Estopinan claimed for Spain in 1497.
