Cohorts

We place great focus on understanding the factors affecting the ageing trajectory, harnessing the power of existing cohorts and intervention studies such as:

The Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe, SHARE

The LIFE study in the United States

The Hertfordshire Ageing Study (Hertfordshire birth cohort),

The Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study (GBCS) - currently managed by the University of Birmingham

UK Biobank

We continue to gain significant value from deep phenotyped cohorts established in the first five years of the Centre, which include:

The 125 lifelong exercisers (master cyclists) cohort initiated in collaboration with Kings College, University of London

The Physical Activity and Healthy Ageing (PAHA) cohort of 200 healthy elders not meeting exercise guidelines (established at the University of Birmingham)

MRC COPD MAP cohorts from >200 muscle wasted and non-wasted patients

The BEACON very early arthritis cohort

Healthy young and old volunteers during chronic exercise training interventions and subsequent detraining
