Roving from the architectural features of specific properties to characters remembered from childhood church sermons, fragments of dialect, dress, custom, and house ornament; and peppered with her own photographs and illustrations, Jekyll’s text is devoted to recording her impressions of local culture, used to promote her own Arts and Crafts sensitivity to place. This work is an important example of the twentieth-century reclamation of the distinctiveness of local village life, and Jekyll’s prime concern is the countryside included in her personal definition of Old West Surrey.

[6
21,44,65,67,7,66,68
0":"post-609","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"hentry","7":"category-bookshelf","8":"tag-19th-century","9":"tag-20th-century","10":"tag-architecture","11":"tag-arts-and-crafts","12":"tag-local-history","13":"tag-ornament","14":"tag-surrey","16":"with-featured-image"},"featured_image_urls_v2":
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2020/11/jekyll-old-west-surrey-square.jpg",600,600,false
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2020/11/jekyll-old-west-surrey-square-300x300.jpg",300,300,true
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2020/11/jekyll-old-west-surrey-square-450x450.jpg",450,450,true
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2020/11/jekyll-old-west-surrey-square.jpg",600,600,false
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2020/11/jekyll-old-west-surrey-square.jpg",600,600,false],"1536x1536":["https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2020/11/jekyll-old-west-surrey-square.jpg",600,600,false],"2048x2048":["https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2020/11/jekyll-old-west-surrey-square.jpg",600,600,false
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2020/11/jekyll-old-west-surrey-square-600x400.jpg",600,400,true
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2020/11/jekyll-old-west-surrey-square-600x600.jpg",600,600,true
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2020/11/jekyll-old-west-surrey-square.jpg",600,600,false
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2020/11/jekyll-old-west-surrey-square.jpg",600,600,false
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2020/11/jekyll-old-west-surrey-square-300x300.jpg",300,300,true]},"post_excerpt_stackable_v2":"
Gertrude Jekyll

","category_list_v2":"Bookshelf","author_info_v2":
Alexandra Harris
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/author/harrisaz/"},"comments_num_v2":"0 comments
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2020/11/jekyll-old-west-surrey-square-600x400.jpg
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2020/11/jekyll-old-west-surrey-square-600x600.jpg
["GET
