It is a description of Trieste and its past; it is also an attempt to work out what Trieste means to Morris, and to understand how one’s relationship with a place changes through time. It shows how to appreciate a place’s sadness, ‘the allure of lost consequence and fading power’. It’s a great book on place because it doesn’t just tell you about a place, but shows you how to enjoy it. The best place to read it is outside a bar off the Piazza Unità d’Italia, sipping a Campari and soda, gazing out into the Adriatic for a glimpse of the ghost of Browning’s Waring.

[6
33,10,7,52
0":"post-1068","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"hentry","7":"category-bookshelf","8":"tag-landscapes","9":"tag-life-writing","10":"tag-local-history","11":"tag-memory","13":"with-featured-image"},"featured_image_urls_v2":
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2021/01/6168.books_.origjpg-e1610622155938.jpg",286,317,false
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2021/01/6168.books_.origjpg-e1610622155938-286x300.jpg",286,300,true
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2021/01/6168.books_.origjpg-e1610622155938.jpg",286,317,false
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2021/01/6168.books_.origjpg-e1610622155938.jpg",286,317,false
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2021/01/6168.books_.origjpg-e1610622155938.jpg",286,317,false],"1536x1536":["https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2021/01/6168.books_.origjpg-e1610622155938.jpg",286,317,false],"2048x2048":["https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2021/01/6168.books_.origjpg-e1610622155938.jpg",286,317,false
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2021/01/6168.books_.origjpg-287x400.jpg",287,400,true
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2021/01/6168.books_.origjpg-e1610622155938.jpg",286,317,false
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2021/01/6168.books_.origjpg-e1610622155938.jpg",286,317,false
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2021/01/6168.books_.origjpg-e1610622155938.jpg",286,317,false
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2021/01/6168.books_.origjpg-e1610622155938.jpg",286,317,false]},"post_excerpt_stackable_v2":"
Jan Morris

","category_list_v2":"Bookshelf","author_info_v2":
Jessica Fay
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/author/fayj/"},"comments_num_v2":"0 comments
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2021/01/6168.books_.origjpg-287x400.jpg
https://more.bham.ac.uk/artsofplace/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/2021/01/6168.books_.origjpg-e1610622155938.jpg
["GET
